Solar Powered Air Conditioner

If you are looking to move to off-grid, build a net zero home, or reduce your carbon footprint, one of the first places to look is climate control. Cooling alone accounts for 16% of energy consumption, and is responsible for 117 million tons of CO2 emissions globally.

A solar powered air solar air conditioning can cut your cooling costs by up to half, and decreases your power consumption from the grid. In some cases, these air conditioning systems can provide 100% of your cooling needs when the sun is out!

Solar air conditioners are not the same as solar powered heating systems, which are more commonly used in the US. Solar air conditioning systems use DC (direct current) solar, and convert it to AC power on site using an inverter. The system will also have electronics that manage the on / off cycling based on solar output, and will use batteries or grid power when needed to keep you cool when the sun is not out.

Solar Cooling Solutions: Harnessing the Sun’s Power with Solar-Powered Air Conditioners

Many different companies produce these products, and the technology is evolving quickly. In the near future, we are likely to see more hybrid solar ac systems that work as well on direct solar as they do on grid-tied electricity, and will have the option of being completely off gird when the sun is not shining. This will be important for those who live in areas that experience frequent power outages, as these systems would allow them to keep cool without resorting to noisy and polluting generators. The HotSpot Energy ACDC12C is a good example of this type of product. The indoor unit is just 34″ x 8″ x 12″, and can be mounted on most walls, so it does not require a large amount of space. The outdoor unit is a bit larger at 34″ x 13″ x 22″, but is still very compact and easily mounted.
